What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a body sculpting procedure, also known as lipoplasty or suction assisted lipectomy.  Unwanted fat can be removed from nearly any area of the body using this technique. Liposuction, or lipoplasty should not be used as a method of losing weight; however it is excellent for removing stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to diet and excercise. There were 246,354 liposuction procedures performed in the United States in 2017.

Is Liposuction Right for You?

The ideal candidate for liposuction is a person of normal weight, who has pockets of fat which have been difficult to eliminate with excercise and diet, and who has good skin tone. Good physical and psychological health is very important. Adult patients of any age can have liposuction, although older patients may have skin with less tone and elasticity then when they were young. Patients with poor skin tone may not achieve as good a result as younger patients with good skin elasticity.

Your Liposuction Consultation with Dr. Weinrach

During your consultation with Dr. Weinrach, he will review your medical history, and perform a physical examination. He will evaluate your areas of concern, and carefully assess your skin quality. Dr. Weinrach will review the most appropriate options for achieving the best body contour for you. Depending on your wishes and anatomy, a procedure other than liposuction may be most appropriate. A common example of this is a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty  for loose skin and stretch marks around the abdomen. Liposuction and abdominoplasty are also commonly combined.

Please be open and honest in discussing your concerns with Dr. Weinrach. He will be equally open and honest with you, describing the options in detail as well as their limitations and risks. People considering liposuction can feel overwhelmed by the myriad of options and techniques being promoted today. Dr. Weinrach will be very honest in helping you to decide which is the most appropriate treatment for you. This decision is based on a number of factors, including your specific concerns, expectations, and anatomy.

Before Your Body Sculpting Procedure

Before your surgery, Dr. Weinrach will let you know which medicines to take and avoid, and when to stop eating and drinking before surgery. Please make arrangements for a friend or family member to drive you home after the procedure, as you will not be able to drive that day.

Where Your Liposuction Will Be Performed

Your safety is always Dr. Weinrach’s number one priority. He only operates in accredited surgery centers and hospitals. He has hospital privileges for all procedures he performs. Smaller-volume liposuction is usually done as an outpatient basis. However, if a large volume of fat will be removed, or if the liposuction is being performed in conjunction with other procedures, a stay in a hospital or overnight facility may be required.

Various types of anesthesia can be used for liposuction procedures. Together, you and Dr. Weinrach will select the type of anesthesia that provides the most safe and effective level of comfort for your surgery.

If only a small amount of fat and a limited number of body sites are involved, liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia, which anesthetizes only the affected areas. For more extensive procedures, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is used.

Lipoplasty Technique and Variations

Liposuction is a procedure where fat deposits are removed to recontour one or more areas of the body. Through a very small incision, a solution called “tumescent solution” is first injected into the areas of concern. This solution consists of salt water, lidocaine (a local anesthetic), and epinephrine (to constrict blood vessels). This solution greatly reduces blood loss and provides anesthesia during surgery and reduces discomfort after surgery. A cannula attached to suction is then passed back and forth through the fatty layer, breaking up and removing the unwanted fat.

Ultrasound-Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL): This technique involves the addition of a small cannula that produces ultrasound energy. This is applied after the tumescent solution is injected, but before the liposuction is performed. As the cannula passes through the areas of fat, the ultrasound energy gently loosens the fat cells from the surrounding tissue, leaving blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue unharmed. The fat is then removed with gentle liposuction.

UAL has been shown to be an improvement to traditional lipoplasty for fibrous areas of the body, such as the enlarged male breast (gynecomastia), “love-handles”, and upper back. The ultrasound energy also stimulates better skin contraction than traditional liposuction. Vaser is a method of ultrasound assisted liposuction which Dr. Weinrach has found to be very effective.

After Your Body Sculpting

To control swelling and to help your skin better fit its new contours, you will be fitted with an elastic garment to place gentle compression over the treated areas for a few weeks. Discomfort is not severe, and can be controlled with over the counter and prescription pain medication if needed.

Getting Back to Normal after Lipoplasty

You will start walking around as soon as possible after surgery to reduce swelling and stimulate circulation. You will begin to feel better within one week and you should be back to work within a few days following your surgery. No stitches are necessary in the vast majority of cases.

Strenuous activity should be avoided for about a month as your body continues to heal. The majority of the bruising and swelling usually goes away within a few weeks, some swelling may remain for several months.

Dr. Weinrach will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your progress.

Your New Look

Initially, you may not appreciate a major improvement as the treated areas will be swollen. However, improvement will gradually become noticeable after several weeks, when most of the swelling has subsided. Any persistent mild swelling is usually gone by around three months, and the final contour will then be visible.

You will almost certainly be very pleased with the results of your surgery. You should find that you are more comfortable in a wider variety of clothing and be more at ease with your body. Eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise will help you maintain your new shape.
