What is a Brow Lift?
A brow lift is a procedure that lifts low or sagging eyebrows and improved forehead lines, transforming an unnatural sad, tired, or angry appearance into one that is more youthful and refreshed. A receding hairline can be improved with one of the available techniques.
Is Brow Lift Right for You?
Forehead lifts are most commonly performed in the 40-60 age range, however, people of any age with low, sagging brows deep lines due to stress or muscle activity may be good candidates for this procedure. Ideal candidates are healthy, nonsmokers.
Forehead lift is commonly performed together with a facelift to provide balance to the face. Eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) is also often performed at the same time as a forehead lift, especially when there is considerable skin overhang in the upper eyelids. Sometimes, patients who believe they need upper-eyelid surgery find that a forehead lift better meets their needs, as what they thought was excess upper eyelid skin was really eyebrow skin.
Your Brow Lift Consultation with Dr. Weinrach
During your consultation, Dr. Weinrach will discuss your medical history and examine you. Please be sure to tell Dr. Weinrach if you have had previous facial surgery or if you smoke. Please be open and honest regarding your concerns and your expectations with Dr. Weinrach.
If you decide to proceed with a forehead lift, Dr. Weinrach will explain the surgical technique, the recommended type of anesthesia, the type of facility where the surgery will be performed, the risks and the costs involved. Please do not hesitate to ask Dr. Weinrach any questions you may have, especially those regarding your expectations and concerns about the results of surgery.
Before Your Brow Lift
Dr. Weinrach will give you specific instructions to prepare for the procedure. He will tell you what medications to take or avoid, and when to stop eating and drinking before surgery. Carefully following these instructions will help your surgery and your recovery proceed more smoothly.
As you will not be able to drive after surgery, you should arrange for someone to drive you home or to your hotel after the procedure. If you are from out of town we can help you with transportation arrangements.
Where Your Brow Lift Will Be Performed
Safety is always Dr. Weinrach’s number one priority. Dr. Weinrach only operates in accredited surgery centers and hospitals. He has hospital priviledges for every procedure he does.
Anesthesia for Brow Lift
Most forehead lifts are performed under local anesthesia, combined with a sedative to make you drowsy. You will be in a light sleep, and although you may feel some tugging and mild discomfort, your forehead will be insensitive to pain.
At times general anesthesia may be indicated, in which case you will sleep through the entire operation.
Technique of Brow Lift
Dr. Weinrach will help you decide which surgical approach will best achieve your cosmetic goals: the classic or “open” method, the endoscopic forehead lift, or the newest, and very powerful and effective lateral subcutaneous browlift. Make sure you understand the technique that Dr. Weinrach recommends and why he feels it is best for you.
Lateral subcutaneous brow lift: In most cases this is now Dr. Weinrach’s procedure of choice. A small incision is placed at the hairline in the temple area of the scalp. The skin is undermined down to just above the eyebrow. The eyebrow is then lifted under direct vision and the excess skin is removed. The incision is closed with sutures and clips. This procedure is rapid and very effective and lasting. The resulting scar is in most cases hardly noticeable.
Other techniques include:
The classic forehead lift: Dr. Weinrach rarely uses this procedure, for which a coronal incision is used. This is a relatively large incision which starts in the scalp at one ear, and goes across the top of the scalp all the way to the level of the other ear.
Through this incision, the skin of the forehead is carefully lifted, exposing the muscles of the eyebrow for manipulation. The eyebrows can then be elevated and excess scalp at the incision line is then trimmed away to create a smoother forehead and more youthful appearance.
The incision is then closed with stitches or clips. This procedure has the disadvantages of a long scar, scalp numbness, the possibility of chronic itching at the incision site, and hair loss at the incision site. The hair line is also raised.
The endoscopic forehead lift: Dr. Weinrach rarely uses this procedure as well. Rather than making one long coronal incision, several short scalp incisions, each less than an inch in length are made. An endoscope, which is a thin camera device connected to a television monitor, is inserted through one of the incisions, giving clear view of the muscles and tissues beneath the skin. By inserting instruments through the different incisions, the forehead skin is lifted and the muscles and underlying tissues are removed or altered to raise the eyebrows and smooth the forehead. The eyebrows are secured into their new position either with sutures, temporary fixation screws, or slowly absorbing anchors.
When the lift is complete, the scalp incisions are closed with stitches or clips. Although this procedure does eliminate the long scar of the classic forehead lift, as well as its complications of scalp numbness, chronic itching, and hair loss; recurrence of the brow ptosis, or drooping, is a problem. This procedure may not give long lasting results.
After Your Brow Lift
You likely will have a dressing on your forehead for twenty four hours. You may shower after the dressing is removed. The stitches or staples used to close the incisions are usually removed within a week.
Getting Back to Normal after your Brow Lift
You will be up and walking after your surgery. Light activity is encouraged during the first week after surgery.
Most patients feel up to returning to light work after about one week. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for several weeks.
After about three weeks, most of the visible signs of surgery will have faded, and you will really begin to appreciate your new and refreshed appearance.
Your New Look
Most patients are very pleased with the results of a forehead lift. Often, patients don’t realize how much their sagging forehead contributed to the signs of aging until they see how much younger and more rested they appear after the lift.
Although a forehead lift does not stop the clock, it can minimize the appearance of aging for many years.
